RLSS National Drowning Prevention Week

RLSS National Drowning Prevention Week was a huge success – mainly down to the enthusiasm and energy of all the teachers who taught all classes about Water Safety. All swimmers from age 3 upwards learnt about safe swimming at the beach and what the different coloured flags meant, the S.A.F.E code and what to do if they saw someone in difficulty. All swimmers enjoyed swimming in T shirts –  a…

Happy Easter.

The Spring term has whizzed by and the Easter Intensive course has just finished – and what fun we had! Happy Swimmers with lots of progress made in the 4 days. My highlight has to be the April Fool of telling parents that hats had to be worn along with the blue overshoes to avoid ‘hair droppings!” Teacher Antonia had no idea it was an April Fool although teaching for an hour and a half wearing…

Aquakids swimmers spring into the new term!

Where has January gone – the month has whizzed by with Xmas all but a distant memory. Aquakids swimmers have all settled back into lessons and are happy and showing progress already.

Jumping into deep water is a skill loved by most and is an important fundamental movement skill. Swimming develops not only the core aquatic skills such as submersion, aquatic breathing and sculling…

Christmas Fishes and a Happy 2015

What a fun end to an amazing term – festive fun, Freddos, awards, success trackers and lots of smiles and laughter. Aided by a fantastic team of teachers who made the last week of term so memorable for the swimmers.
It always such a busy end of the term but thank you to parents/swimmers for cards, gifts, kind words and support -…

Fast forward to 2014

And here we are 20 years later with Aquakids  now firmly based at Bromley High on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday with a fantastic team of teachers. Debbie recently left to focus on her swim school at Colfes and recently in Perth!
We have also built some great links with the school and many Bromley High girls come and help going on to achieve their swim qualifications as part of the Duke Of…

The end of an era – Farewell Furness :(

So Debbie and I started Aquakids @ Bromley High on a Wednesday evening in November 2000. Debbie had, and still does have her own swim school at Colfes School but it was great to share the work load and ideas at Bromley.
Furness Pool where I had my Saturday school was an old pool but unique in that parents sat round the edge of the pool and many made great friendships through the camaraderie and…

So there we were – established at Furness, numbers growing and football taking place as well as the swim lessons.
Aquakids then set up at Valence School, Westerham on Saturday afternoons and Summer Intensives also took place with trampoline sessions/sport activities – so following the same format as Furness swimmers could do a trampoline/sport lesson followed by a swim – all spurred on by me as…

Football and Aquakids?

Word of mouth is very powerful and Aquakids grew very quickly – I re met an old ‘netball friend’ Sally Matkins who joined the swim team – so there were 2 swim groups.
I wanted Joe to do gym so I introduced gymnastics as an activity which was fine but as the sports hall was so cold this then then turned into football lessons.
Swimmers could book into an hour football followed by a swim lesson…

Saturday 5 November 1994

What did I want from my lessons? I wanted the teacher in the water, small classes and a
sense of accountability; a swim school that cared about each and every swimmer. These aims
are still at the forefront of Aquakids ethos today.
Having recently moved back to Sidcup I became a Post Natal contact for the NCT and met
Karen Donovan (as was then) who knew absolutely everyone in the area – or so…

1994 – Where it all began……

20 years – its still hard to believe Aquakids has been going now for 20 years next month.
I’m often asked how did it all begin – well are you sitting comfortably …….
My eldest son Joe was 3 years old and I was finding it virtually impossible to
a) find anywhere that took 3 year olds and b) that were any good.
So over a glass of wine on Bank Holiday week end I was re telling this to a…
